RESPONSIBLE AI FOR GOOD FUTURE

Responsible AI is all about creating governance frameworks to evaluate, deploy and monitor AI to create new opportunities for better citizens. In Gartner’s hype cycle, responsible AI will gain hype in 5 to 10 years and to that extent it is on the rise and has gained its required visibility. While we all know that AI is smarter and scalable, it is equally important to bring them within ethical, reproducible, transparent and secure use for betterment. According to a report by Mckinsey Global Institute, two thirds of all jobs could have a major chunk (at least 30%) of their activities automated by 2030. It is expected to replace upto 140 million full time employees world wide.

In a survey conducted by Cognizant, it was found out that 37% of executives believed that AI will decrease the number of people employed whereas 44% believed that it will increase their employee rank instead. We all know that statistics can be used for convenience. So which side of the coin are we?

Hence without getting into any number game, can we look at the dimensions of AI? Theoretically, responsible AI covers — societal value, risk, trust, transparency, fairness, bias mitigation, explainability, accountability, safety, privacy and regulatory compliance. While on the first glance it might look analytical and data driven, it has a lot more to do with our daily life in the form of interactive, visual and functional services and robotics.

In the current world of impending disaster and pandemic, where the rich are getting richer and the poor poorer, it is upto us to either widen this gap or to narrow it down. Responsible AI can play a huge part in this. AI can be used to look at the world holistically instead of atomistically, which will in due course ensure our present as well as future wellbeing.

So we all have the choice of purpose prior to profit. For example, we can exploit AI profitably on the following -

  1. Undignified jobs such as drainage cleaning
  2. Personalised healthcare like DNA driven healthcare
  3. Reach people who are isolated in places such as desserts
  4. Remove environmental pollution in toxic conditions where human exposure is not advised.

Although today AI is not fully functioning in all spheres of natural intelligence viz. Logical and mathematical, linguistic, spatial, musical, bodily-kinesthetic, intrapersonal, interpersonal and naturalistic intelligence, we as humans possess the power to build AI and make it self-learn. Hence it is becoming imperative to build this under a responsible framework so that right problems can be addressed.

While AI is disrupting the world with many possibilities and is ready to take on the problem statements, are we ready to guide it in the right direction?

Profit is not a bad word, when purpose precedes profit it blossoms and transforms better.

“Definiteness of purpose is the starting point of all achievement”

-W. Clement Stone

“The wise man should restrain his senses like the crane and accomplish his purpose with due knowledge of his place, time and ability.”
